High heat doesn’t merely discharge a stored battery faster — prolonged exposure can shorten its useful life.

Airplane Caretaker’s Summer Aircraft Battery Storage & Monitoring Service keeps your aircraft battery in our climate-controlled facility at Falcon Field, with open-circuit voltage monitoring and maintenance charging as required.

During peak Arizona summer conditions, an uninsulated aircraft hangar can become significantly hotter than the outside air, with interior temperatures reaching 130°F or higher on the hottest afternoons. These conditions can expose stored batteries to temperatures well beyond manufacturers’ preferred storage conditions — temperatures where increased monitoring and charging are required, and where prolonged exposure may reduce battery life.

Why climate-controlled storage matters:

Concorde states that battery self-discharge is approximately 4% per month at 77°F and doubles for every 18°F increase in battery temperature — approximately 8% per month at 95°F. Above 95°F, Concorde recommends maintenance charging approximately once per month, or monitoring OCV and charging as required.

Gill / Teledyne Battery Products states that its batteries are ideally stored around 80°F. When stored between 95°F and 110°F, Gill calls for monthly inspection and recharging. Gill also states that for every 18°F increase in temperature, the battery’s discharge rate doubles.

Instead of leaving your aircraft battery exposed to months of extreme heat during a period when you may not be flying regularly, Airplane Caretaker provides a climate-controlled, monitored storage environment designed to reduce heat-related self-discharge, help preserve battery condition during storage, and avoid unnecessary exposure to conditions manufacturers identify as detrimental to battery life.
